The sixth grade social studies curriculum is focused on Geography, Civics & Government, and Economics. We will also focus on reading and writing skills through each of the social studies disciplines covered.
Geography standards will introduce and reinforce mapping skills, explore characteristics of the world, and identify the relationship between humans and the earth's characteristics.

Civics standards focus on citizenship and the individual's role in the larger community. Government systems throughout the world will be discussed and evaluated.

Economics standards focus on understanding, and comparing and contrasting economic systems. The impact of the availability and scarcity of resources will also be explored.

- choose the most appropriate maps and graphics to answer questions.
- use data and a variety of symbols and colors to create maps.
- describe and compare the physical and human characteristics of places.
- explain how the characteristics of different physical environments affect human activities.
- explain and evaluate the ways in which humans induce changes in their physical environment.
Civics standards focus on citizenship and the individual's role in the larger community. Government systems throughout the world will be discussed and evaluated.

- identify types of government throughout the world.
- identify the similarities and differences between the different types of government.
Economics standards focus on understanding, and comparing and contrasting economic systems. The impact of the availability and scarcity of resources will also be explored.

- define the 4 major economic systems in the world (mixed, market, command, and traditional)
- identify the economic system in place within a country
- identify the factors that contribute to scarcity of resources.
- understand the definition of opportunity cost.
- analyze a culture’s resources to infer what that means for them.
- use data to determine the factors among economic change and development.
- analyze the cause and effect of the factors that lead to economic change and development.
Reading & Writing
Students will be able to:
- integrate visual information (e.g., in charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or maps) with other information in print and digital texts.
- conduct short research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question), drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues of exploration.
- write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.
- draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
